Julia Grünseis
Second semester Bachelor programme Mathematics
«For me, it was clear from a certain point that I wanted to study math and only math. Not only because it was the first thing that popped into my mind, but also because it does not limit my future professional life. With math you don’t study towards a specific profession, you rather learn to promote the imagination and logical thinking, which will be useful to me not only now, but for my entire life. So all the doors are wide open.»

Marcel Brod
Fourth semester Bachelor programme Mathematics
«Like with most of my fellow students my interest in mathematics hasn’t just begun with the start of my studies. Instead, my enthusiasm for logical and abstract thinking has increased continuously, so that the decision to study mathematics was an easy one. The influence of this structured thinking is evident in my everyday life, when I grasp complex issues quickly and reduce them to the essential points. ETH Zurich has high expectations of their students and in return offers a truly excellent setting. Ultimately it’s the challenges that make you utilize your potential.»

Thomas Scholtes
Fourth semester Bachelor programme Mathematics
«When I had survived the first few weeks of my first semester, I was amazed at how much time, compared to school, I have to spend studying. Often I am busy with tasks or reading scripts until late at night. However, it never seems like actual work to me. Sometimes it is so much fun to work on a solution that I forget about time and don’t want to stop. Additionally, the feeling of having found an elegant solution is extremely satisfying.»

Manolis Manoli
Fourth semester Bachelor programme Mathematics
«To many new students ETH Zurich seems to be a large and somewhat impersonal institution. But one gets familiar with the situation very quickly and soon discovers the many facets of student life. Apart from education and research, student support and a variety of sports are offered, not to mention partying. It’s all about the mix! The study of mathematics in itself manages again and again to lift relatively simple concepts to frighteningly complicated levels. But if one gets involved and extracts the fundamentals from the impenetrable notations and formulations, that's a great feeling! »
